Job Description

The President is responsible for developing and implementing strategies and procedures for carrying out the Trust’s mission of empowering the Inupiat through language, culture and education; and critically for ensuring that the organization has the sustainable financial resources it requires to fulfill its mission. This position serves at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees for the Aqqaluk Trust and functions as the Chief Executive and Operating Officer, responsible for overall leadership and management of the Aqqaluk Trust programs, staff, and fiscal execution. 

 

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on working manager/executive; and have a deep understanding of the social and economic intricacies of the NANA region to support shareholder education and language programs within and outside the region.  Managing relationships within the region and outside with partnering entities, communities, tribal and governmental organizations is imperative to the success of the Aqqaluk Trust.   

 

Position Location:  Alaska - Kotzebue Preferred.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing and implementing a fundraising program to attract sufficient private, governmental, and corporate donations and grants that the Trust becomes self-sustaining entity
  • Responsible for fund development and fiscal management of the organization including budget development and execution; knowledge and execution of accounting procedures to oversee the day-to-day and fiscal responsibilities of the organization
  • Responsible for ensuring that the strategies, goals, policies and directives of the Aqqaluk Trust and Board of Trustees are carried out, including providing appropriate leadership and direction to the staff and direct oversight and engagement in programs. 
  • Determines the employment positions and organizational structure needed to carry out the mission of the Trust; and responsible for selection, training, supervision, evaluation and development of program management and staff
  • Responsible for the design and successful implementation of Trust programs in accordance with the Trust’s budget, such as language programs, culture camp and activities, and community engagement
  • Develop, plan, implement and oversee projects of the Trust such as facility planning and management, community partnerships and opportunities.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the Trust and its programs operate in strict compliance with applicable laws, regulations, grant requirements, and best practices for non-profit trusts.
  • Provides recommendations to the Trustees regarding the focus, direction, and growth of the Trust, and carries out the strategic directions of the Trustees
  • Works cooperatively with regional organizations, Alaska Native organizations, and other entities to achieve the Trust’s objectives and to maximize benefits to the trust beneficiaries.
  • Participates in professional organizations and training for non-profit executives.
  • Develops and implements a plan for making the Trust a well-known and well-respected charitable organization.
  • Carries out such other and further duties as may be requested by the Trustees for benefit of the Aqqaluk Trust.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in related discipline or at least five years of executive experience
  • At least 10 years of experience leading a business or non-profit/private entity within defined budget including managing employees, programs, and property.
  • At least 5 years of experience raising significant resources from foundations, corporations, individuals, events and public entities
  • May require frequent travel, both within the NANA Region, state and outside Alaska

Competencies

  • Ability to speak Inupiaq or committed and motivated to learn the language
  • Must have demonstrated strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Must display a superior level of interpersonal, written and communication skills.
  • Must show team-building skills and ability to focus on strategic objectives.
